                                       UTERINE FIBROMYOMA   (FIBROID UTERUS)

Fibroid is usually a benign (non cancerous)   growth from the muscular layer of the uterus. Fibroid usually develops during the reproductive period of women’s life. Fibroid tumor is an admixture of muscle tissue and fibrous tissue. Hence the name ‘FIBROMYOMA’

CAUSE: The exact cause of fibroid is not known. Fibroid tumors grow when body starts producing more oestrogen i.e. during reproductive period of women’s life. They usually shrink and disappear after menopause when the body stops producing oestrogen. A   women will almost never develop fibroid tumors after menopause.

LOCATION: The fibromyoma may develop in the body of the uterus, which is the commonest site. It may sometimes develop in the cervical region in 1-2% of cases.

 TYPES

1) INTERSTITIAL (Intramural)FIBROID: It grows within the uterine wall. Posterior wall of the uterus is the commonest site.

2) SUBSEROUS (Sub peritoneal) FIBROID: The tumor grows on the outer wall of the uterus. It lies underneath the peritoneum. Rarely, the rupture of subperitoneal vein on the subserous fibroid   may cause intra peritoneal hemorrhage. It may be sessile or pedunculated.

  • LIGAMENTARY FIBROID: When it grows between the layers of broad ligaments (supports of uterus) it forms ligamentary fibroid.

  • PARASITIC OR WANDERING FIBROID: Rarely a pedunculated tumor gets detached from the uterine wall and adheres with surrounding structures.

3) SUBMUCOUS FIBROID: The tumor grows underneath the mucous membrane of the uterus.

SYMPTOMS:

Most of the fibroids are symptom less. Some women may have heavy bleeding during menses (menorrhagia) and other menstrual disorders (metorrhagia) Pressure symptoms - There can be frequency and urgency to pass urine due to pressure on the bladder. Some women may not be able to pass urine. There is a feeling of lump in the lower abdomen for which the women may seek treatment.

Infertility : Pain in abdomen during menses (Secondary dysmenorrhoea) Palpitation and weakness may develop gradually due to anemia.

DIAGNOSIS  Most of the women are not even aware of having fibroids as most of the fibroids are symptomless .Some women may come with complaints of heavy bleeding during menses or irregular bleeding. Diagnosis is made during gynecological examination (per vaginal examination). Ultrasound scan confirms the diagnosis.

HOMOEOPATHIC   MANAGEMENT OF   UTERINE   FIBROIDS

Homoeopathic medicines given after proper case taking help in reducing the size of fibroids and sometimes they may totally disappear if they are small in size. But larger fibroids cause excessive bleeding during periods. If the patient has difficulty in urination and constipation, surgical intervention is necessary.
