CHRONIC   BRONCHITIS

Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tree which consists of small airways in the lungs where air passes through when we breathe. Chronic bronchitis is characterized by cough that produces sputum or mucus. The mucus plugs up the airways, as a result it becomes difficult for the air to enter and hence the person has difficulty in breathing. It is also defined as a condition in which there is cough with mucus for atleast three months in a year for two successive years.

 CAUSES

  •  Cigarette smoking irritates the bronchial tubes and causes excessive production of mucus.

  •  Infection: As a result of acute bronchitis. Infective focus may be in tonsils or in the lungs.

  •  Air pollution: Due to dust , industrial pollution, chemical fumes etc.

  •  Chronic renal disease, alcoholism may also cause chronic bronchitis.

 SYMPTOMS

  •  Constant paroxysmal cough which is more in winter.

  •  Cough with expectoration which may be little or thick and frothy.

  •  Breathlessness, difficulty in breathing.

  •  Fever.

  •  Haemoptysis: Cough with streaks of blood.

 INVESTIGATIONS

  •  Blood test: Complete blood count (C.B.C,E. S. R.)

  •  X ray chest.

 MANAGEMENT

  • To stop smoking is the most important thing.

  •  Stop the use of deodorants, insecticides and hair sprays.

  •  Avoid damp and foggy places.

  •  Increasing the patient’s resistance by regular exercise in fresh air and deep breathing.
