Cervical spondylosis is caused by degeneration of cervical disks (cushions between the vertebrae) which results in narrowing of the intervertebral disc space and results in spur formation( abnormal growths)on the margins of adjacent vertebrae. The changes caused by degeneration compresses the nerve roots resulting in pain and weakness in the neck and arm.

Cervical spondylosis refers to a wear and tear phenomenon.

CAUSES

Age: As age advances cervical disks degenerate to some degree in most of the people.

SYMPTOMS

Pain in neck radiating to arms or shoulders or abrupt onset of arm pain.
Numbness of one side of a hand, or two or three fingers.
Neck stiffness
Loss of balance
Headache

INVESTIGATIONS

X ray spine may show narrowing of the intervertebral disk spaces,osteophytes, etc.
C.T. scan

MANAGEMENT

Cervical immobilization with cervical collar stops the progression of the symptoms.
Relief of pain with medicines.
For severe cases, complete bed rest with traction is essential.
